When anyone asks why we home educate our children, I have to reply that it is something that has always been on my heart to do. We started out with whatever curriculum was available, the choices being limited. We would hand pick each component to best suit our needs at the time. God has always been faithful to direct our steps as we sought Him for direction. Over the years we have used many Christian publishers' products. After homeschooling for 13 years we often felt like we were not making the most of the time we had with our children, in training them in the ways of the Lord, not for lack of wanting to, but more for lack of knowing how. The academic studies always seemed to push the study of God's Word to the side. In the spring of 2001 while planning the next school year an acquaintance mentioned Student of the Word casually in a conversation. From that time on I could not get it out of my mind, so . . . I made a call to find out more. She directed me to the Student of the Word website. After reading exhaustively about this curriculum and hearing the heart of the authors, we decided to order it and give it a try. God is so good. He has taken us into a whole new dimension. Sow enables us to put priority where it belongs and still meet educational requirements. We have been delighted with the response of our children to Student of the Word. From the first week they expressed how right it felt. I was pleasantly surprised how quickly they caught on to the structure and just started to do the lessons They dug in like never before. As they were working on the same topics they would brainstorm together and discuss ideas. Their binders filled up with completed writing assignments on such topics as Spiritual Warfare, Obedience, Pride, Passover, Keeping our Word, Dangers of Astrology, and How to Put Away Anger, all based on what they had gleaned from their reading in the Word of God. Never before had they done so much writing. It was like they finally felt like they were doing something of value, studying for a purpose. The first year we studied The Torah (Genesis-Deuteronomy). We learned so much about our God, covenant, and the importance of active faith and trust. The second year, as our teens studied Joshua, they learned how victory comes thru faith in God and obedience to his Word and were applying what they learned to their own life situations. We see how the Lord God is laying a foundation in our children's lives that will keep then close to Him eternally. Sow has helped equip us to train our children with a Biblical vision, have a structured plan to meet educational requirements, and also includes instruction in stewardship principles in dealing with home, time and money management. SOW has been a wonderful addition to our homeeschooling and lifelong journey. For more about us and our life journeys visit our Home Page. |
